Today is Vidovdan, aka St. Vitus Day, probably the most important day in Serbian national history.
On this day, in 1389. Serbian prince Lazar called everyone capable of holding a weapon to stand against Turkish invasion which had a force many times stronger than ours. The battle took place in Kosovo, the place that albanians ridiculously claim as theirs now. Back then, Lazar was asked how come he has courage to go to the battle against an opponent many times stronger than him.
He said: "I don't choose my opponents looking at their strength, but how sacred is the thing i defend".
That sole sentence is basically the moving force of our whole nation for over 600 years.
The battle of Kosovo ended as military draw, as both leaders died in battle. Unfortunately, Turks had more men and eventually took control over Serbia and Balkans. However, one must note that this battle gave 20 years for other nations to prepare defense against Turks.
Nowadays some people mock this day, saying we celebrate defeat. Those people don't even understand what this was even about. It's not about win or lose, it's about not going quiet into the night and standing up to something you truly believe in. It's a celebration of spirit of freedom, the desire to choose your own destiny, not submitting to the will of your invaders.
So, i wish you a happy Vidovdan, to everyone who understand what this day is even about
