Fascists and National Socialists, historically, were not natural conservatives. If that were the case then they (the core founders) would have been Christian traditionalists and/or monarchists. Instead they were socialists, artists, bohemians, revolutionaries, etc. who came to agree with core conservative principles (faith, order, hierarchy, family), often as a result of military service in wars, but usually re-imagined and divorced from existing conservative or reactionary groups.

That's the way I see it too, though. The proto-Fascist looked at conservatives vs communists and thought the former was right in theory but not in practice (winning civil and cultural wars) while the latter had shit ambitions but the right kind of revolutionary spirit, tactics and or objectives.
