True, but the Romans were probably a Greek offshoot anyway, and they were the greatest military machine that had existed to that point (just as the Greeks had been previously). Eventually the Greeks took over from within. Diocletian was Greek and Constantine was probably half Greek, and several other of the later Emperors may have been Greek, as well as much of the army. Later Byzantium, the Greek part of Rome, thrived for about a millenium as the most civilized and militarily powerful state of Europe.
