1) The government outsourced a lot of the residential schools to the church.
2) The Natives over exaggerated the conditions. The conditions weren't pleasant but they were not slaughter houses. My university was a former residential school. The residential school ran for about a century. The cemetery on premise isn't that large. Each grave in there has plenty of space. I don't know the exact numbers but I wager less than 30 bodies total. This includes staff who passed away on site not just students. Keep in mind that this school ran before a lot modern medical breakthroughs. It ran during the Spanish flu epidemic. The body count their doesn't scream brutal murder machine. The few photos they have around from the era of the residential school don't scream torture fest either. The children look feed. None of them have visible bruises. The premise looks clean and taken care of. No photos show torture equipment( nor have I seen relics of such equipment). This is a school loves to rail on about the horrors of the residential system. They make a point that every student learns about the schools history. Yet the evidence of the most horrific stories is missing from plain sight.

That was disease. Not intentional abuse. The kids were living in close quarters so it spread fast. There wasn't much that could have been done to treat kids with TB in those days, so they died.
