The term "conspiracy theory" was used to get people to not ask questions. Whenever anyone branded something a conspiracy theory, normies took it to mean that it was nonsense paranoia by crazy tin foil hat people. Now however we have the internet, which means that information propagates much further and much faster to many more people and it's much harder to censor stuff and control information. Whereas before it was hard to be informed on a topic, it's now possible to see all available information.
Couple all this with the fact that there have been actual conspiracies (chemical attacks being blamed on the wrong side, groups deliberately trying to destabilise the middle east and induce mass immigration into europe, gamegate exposing media collusion to push a political narrative, the DNC primaries being rigged, the seven goddesses in Korea, etc...). People are now starting to realise that conspiracies can actually be real and the internet and a distrust in legacy media are emboldening people to start digging.
