Communism doesn't work. The mass starvation in both the Soviet Union and China were directly due to the communist economic policies of the Five Year Plans.

Socialism and communism do not work because they both ignore human nature and attempt to stop human nature by force, which always will have an adverse reaction from the populace. In the case of north korea, the only "working" communist state its clearly not working because that country is shit, showing that even if you are able to stomp out human nature the politics result in mediocre at best standards of living...they will never make anything the rest of the world would consider worth buying basically.
China has improved due to allowing capitalism to exist. America is declining due to allowing socialism to exist (i would argue america is a socialist nation at this point)
