They might be saying it because he went to a high-level art college, and that on some level he actually has the necessary knowledge and skills to improve. He's not held back by a lack of skill so much as he is by a lack of motivation and self-reflection.

A lot of his old art is actually better than his new art (not good, but better), but the fucker is so lazy and full of himself, he's not only unable to improve but has actually regressed due to his complacency.

If he actually put the work in to improve himself right out of college instead of immediately putting himself on a pedestal and blaming his shortcomings on anyone but himself, he could've probably become a legit artist.

Does he have potential? Personally, I don't think so. He's too lazy and full of himself to actually improve. Still, I don't think his artistic ability is what holds him back, but rather that it's the victim of his inflated ego.
