It forces the politicians to serve gold, even when doing so results in their own citizens dying.
It has a devastating effect on business productivity, as the real needs of the economy remain unmet because gold is considered more important.
And if anyone dares to put the needs of people and businesses above gold, the gold standard creates a risk of hyperinflation.
Alas, since we came off the gold standard, the politicians are CHOOSING to ignore the needs of citizens and businesses.
They treat debt as a bad thing, and try in vain (like President Hoover) to balance the budget when they should be trying to grow the economy and ensuring there are always enough new jobs created to replace the old jobs that go overseas.

Inventory management:
1) no lower management needed to track and reorder stock, only cheap help to receive, stock and pull parts from stock.
2) tracking of assembly times to streamline speed and increase productivity.
3) Smaller inventories of stock anf finished products to lower inventory taxes.
4) Fewer workers with slightly higher pay produce the needed products and they cannot afford to lose their jobs as the job market is open to low pay starter employees.
4) Outsource of sub assemblies to cheap Asian factories.
5) The politicians allow this because it increases stock market valve for investors (Republicans) and redistributes wealth to poor nations (Democrats).

Productivity =/= people working harder. Innovations in automation caused this. People aren't working harder now than they were in the 60's & 70's. In fact I'd be willing to say they're not working as hard.
