US lacked the nukes, they had like 9 by 1946, not much more by the time the soviets got them and if they wanted to use them they would still have to nuke or invade Poland,East Germany, etc since you couldn't just fly straight to Stalingrad/Moscow. The soviet army was also in a much better situation by the end of the war than before it and was probably the greatest land army at that time. What you have are nukes being virtually irrelevant unless you want to kill 10s of millions of civilians and a superior enemy. The only way the US could have destroyed both is by doing some Italian tactics and switching sides halfway through the war.
