They're incapable of being rational when it comes to their ego and being on their moral high horse. This is extremely similar to what happened to Gawker. They will fall into the same trap a thousand times.
Instead of thinking rationally about what they stand to gain from this story (nothing, as internet censorship never works) they make it the top headline on their entire site and then the journalist responsible for it digs himself into a hole by responding to twitter criticism.
