Yes, it tastes almost like a black plum, just little bit sweeter. The advantage over a black plum is that the tree is autogamous, so you don't need lot of bees in the area to have a decent harvest. I thought these can be grown almost everywhere, why not in America?

Food scientist here. Bats with rabies are known to feast on them and there have been cases of fruit-borne rabies transmission. Also because they are one of the few fruits that mosquitoes are able to penetrate, and as reservoirs for a vector species to coalesce; they carry a ton of parasites and if you're in a West-Nile Disease Hotspot, a single bite could deliver significant concentrations of it. Unless they have been irradiated, I would not eat these.
