The core message of islam is to simply submit one's self to God. Islam is quite literally, submission and acknowledging that there is no God but God, and that Muhammad(pbuh) is his last messenger. This is a core tenet and called the Shahada. Every human being that acknowledges this is shaheed, and therefore a muslim. "Ashadu an la illah ila Allah, wa ashadu ana Muhammadan rasulu lah".
We also do not believe humans to be naturally sinful. Humans can be both good, and bad. It depends on the choices a human makes, they can be corrupt or good. But every human, even our prophet Muhammad(pbuh) is only a human, and repents for his mistakes. We are ought to take Muhammad(pbuh) as our example and try to lead a life in which we strive for good, and repent for our vices. So in that sense, we are comparable to Christians.

I'm a convert, my family is Christian but has converted to islam well. We felt it aligned more to our national values and core identity to be muslim. The Islamic narrative makes more sense to me personally, it is why I converted and conveyed my family to follow suit.
