It was colored in Ancient Greece and maybe Rome but not in the Italian and other renaissance statues that are the most famous. The renaissance statues were plain white marble because when they found the Greek ones the paint had basically washed off and just left the marble so that's what they initially thought they were.

Natural marble and marble that is left exposed to elements naturally is a bit more yellow. Places like the British Museum used to go to great lengths "restoring" marble statues to all white with strong cleaning agents which esentially to destryed finer details of thir statues. I don't even believe many were painted. One reason marble is used in human sculptures (sculptures of humans) is because it has similar transluscent sub-surface scattering to human flesh. The result being stone that looks more lifelike by virtue of the photo physics. Putting paint on the damn things would eliminate this characteristic.
Now, sure, paint may have been applied sparingly - perhaps on hair, clothing, or iris, but not the 'skin' of the subject. That would only make sense on other types of stone that exhibit no, or 'non-human' sub surface light scattering.
