Here's the real regulation we need:. The company which wired up your house should be a common carrier, and anyone who wants to provide internet through that wire should be allowed to. This is like long distance phone service. This is how most countries outside the US do it. This prevents Monopoly practices and stimulates competition.
Net Neutrality seems to be the topic where the most uninformed are the most vocal.
No net neutrality is the status quo. The Internet became what it is today because of this, not in spite of it. But once you start layering on regulations on how ISPs can behave, you're opening the door for content restrictions that previously didn't exist. Net neutrality is a response to the monopolization of the internet. It's NOT good if the market was truly free and open. However, meme-tier lolbertarians and neocons fail to grasp that the market is extremely difficult to get into because Comcast and Time-Warner have worked hard to shut every newcomer out of the market. (Hence why Google Fiber is having trouble getting started in many states.) You're basically living in a dungeon, and you think the solution is "there are too many things in the dungeon" so you get rid of the comfortable couch. These ISP services are a natural monopoly. There's never going to be 1000 different ISP's competing. There will be maybe 2 or 3 in most areas. In some rural places, only 1.

The fact that the government mandates that prices be uniform for everyone in the store is a regulation technically. But companies are still able to compete effectively. It doesn't mess with the market efficiency to have a regulation like this in place
