I'm pretty much convinced at this point that the Russia narrative is about distracting from the Clinton/Obama/Democrat crimes that are being uncovered as we speak. They know that they're going to come out of this investigation looking worse than Trump. They know they spied on Trump, and that Trump knows. They know that the spying they did was likely illegal, and that they dragged a lot of people into harm's way in an effort to cover it up.
This time, though, they don't have the FBI, DoJ, or the AG to cover for them. And they don't have the Presidential pardon as a last resort. They're walking the tightrope without a net now, so they need to do something - anything - to stop this. So, bang, they pull out a little bit of dirty work they never used during the election. They invented the Russia narrative. They set up the server logs. They tweaked the evidence to justify the FISA court order for a wiretap. They sent a Russia-heavy email to make this all look so much worse. They set up the meeting, which at the time likely seemed pretty benign to Trump Jr. Only in the context of all this other bullshit does the meeting seem kind of sketchy. But how was he to know?
And all of this is just to make it look like Trump is the criminal. They want him to look like an autocratic megalomaniac if he allows any investigation into the Democrats to proceed. Lynch, Rice, Wasserman, etc, etc, could all be facing serious consequences for their actions around the election. They broke the law. They tried to influence the election by interfering in the FBI investigation. Comey helped, thinking he'd be rewarded when Hillary 'inevitably' won. They're all in up to their necks trying to stay out of jail. And all because they figured Trump couldn't win.
And the only way they can do that is to keep this pressure on Trump. Make it look like he's persecuting the Dems for trying to 'get to the bottom' of Russia collusion. They want him to look like a dictator when he allows them to hang.
