The thing with the Holocaust story is that the implication is the majority of people in camps died by way of sadistic torture, experiments and mass extermination pogroms.
The reality is probably a lot closer to what has been described here. Nazi Germany was a nation at war with the world and they had concentration camps just like we did with the Japanese.
We put Japanese in camps and the conditions were adequate and there's very little outrage because of it for two reasons. First of all, because we won. We win, we write the history and only now, long after the war, do we have the emotional detachment to speak about it. Secondly, America and Canada did not have the shit bombed out of then while suffering land invasions on three fronts. If we had lost the war as badly as the Germans did, we would be facing the same guilt tripping over Japanese internment... They would be talking about a racist Holocaust against the Japanese people and we would be history's monsters.
Considering that the Germans couldn't supply ball bearings to an ever shrinking number of tank factories, and that they struggled to get food and ammunition to troops at the front on account of their devastated rail network, how realistic is it to keep non-profits civilian concentration camps well stocked with food and medicine?
I'm not denying the Holocaust nor am I denying that there were acts of brutality, especially in the closing days of the war... but it is certainly more realistic that detainees at these camps, Jews, gypsies, pacifists and otherwise, largely died from disease, malnutrition and exposure rather than gas chambers... And Germany, like any nation that participates in the internment of anyone at all, was responsible for the conditions that ultimately killed them.
So yeah. The allies are responsible for what happened to these POWs and that's just a fact of life.
