A conservative friend of mine recommended that I read this book and called it the "cure for my Marxist tendencies"
Is there a TLDR anywhere that summarizes all the points and arguments that Thomas Sowell makes in it?
The shortest audio book version I can find is over 9 hours long and I just don't have the time to read it at the moment, though I do plan to get to it in the future, but I'd really like to know some of the things Sowell says since this isn't the first time I've come across his name when asking right wingers for their opinions
If there isnt a TLDR, can any users on this board who've read the book elaborate on the arguments that Sowell presents?
there isnt a tldr stop being a god damn fag and read it, it's a great book that teaches you exactly what it says on the cover, starting with simple concepts such as prices
stop looking for the easy routes in life
Jayden Rogers
How much time did you spend (or do you spend) ingesting Marx et. al ? It takes time to learn, invest in yourself. You can do a LOT worse than reading Thomas Sowell.
William Green
thanks for responding
I do plan to read the full thing but the soonest I'll have the time to sit down for it is probably in a couple months time unfortunately
Anthony Harris
>A Liberal willing to listen >is not willing to listen If you want dumbed down summaries from people who haven't even read the book (me included), you came to the right place.
If the book is too long then read a little every day, or read something more introductory. You'll find lots of information on right-wing economic theory on mises' website, or you could listen to shorter interviews from Sowell, there's lots of good ones.
Ethan Lewis
Lord... make time. It's only your life we are talking about.
Alexander Morgan
None really. Admittedly I mostly adopted my views about economics from years of hearing from people how conservative economic proposals are uncaring towards the poor and only benefit the rich. So I eventually started to agree with people who were against conservatives by default
Which is why I'm now looking into actual economic theory
Leo Morgan
Your best bet is to probably take an hour out of your day to read what you can. Keep doing that every day and you'll have it read in no time.
Hope you end up liking it :)
Jaxon Butler
>has the time to shitpost on Sup Forums >doesn't have the time for reading a introductory book on a given subject
C'mon, dude
Matthew Robinson
>i don't want to read >i know, i can listen to an audio book thingy >oh no that's too long and ooo shiny >maybe someone can tell me what to think instead flush yourself down the toilet

Are there any particular articles or videos that you would recommend?
Adam Butler
>Is there a TLDR anywhere Stop trying to take shortcuts and read the book.
Austin Cox
>doesn't even open the book >Hey friends! Give me a tl;dr! >I have some marxist tendencies! Shocking, a marxist wants others to do the work for him. Just read it. You are not too busy to spend a little time each day reading.
Why the fuck are lefties so lazy? It seriously is shown time and time again without fail.

I plan to read the book when I have the time. I just have too much work at the moment

>Marxist tendencies >Liberal willing to listen
You are a socialist.
Colton Thomas
It's actually pretty impressive that you're willing to admit that. Starting with Basic Economics is a pretty good idea. It's not Rand tier intense pro consumerism, but it is a good introduction in to conservative economics. It would be better to read the book yourself, it's not long at all.
Nolan Hernandez
I plan too. Was just hoping for some info that could tide me over until I have the time
Joshua Sullivan
> Willing to listen > "Read a book OP" > No don't want to do that, somebody give me a TLDR
Dylan Torres
No you don't
I worked full time going through law school (also full time) and I made time daily to read a little to better myself. Drop the lazy mentality. Down time is for the weak.
Read Economics In One Lesson by Henry Hazlitt instead. It's the orinigal, superior, succinct version of Basic Economics.
Benjamin Miller
I do tend to agree more with politicians that people refer to as socialists
Caleb Smith
Its easy to listen to audio books. Go for a walk or listen when in the car. 9 hours is nothing.
Aaron King
>short version it's the jews
Jace Bell
Thanks!
Any other information that anyone thinks would be helpful is welcome
Ethan Campbell
Listening to it on audible now. So far it mostly covers unintended consequences of leftism feels in cities, and communism in general. However, I have not heard an argument against UBI yet, and wonder what Sowell's thoughts on it are.
James Cox
Thanks. I'll download it now
Brody Sanders
who are you kidding? you're no more going to watch that video than you are going to cure your aids.
Adam Price
Just read this.

I just have too much on my plate on the moment with university and my job, but I plan to read the full book when I have time
Hudson Rodriguez
Are you being serious? If so can you elaborate please?
William Nguyen
oh a marxist leftist who "doesnt have the time" to fully read something...

The only book you should read is Protocols of Zion After a few months proceed to read something related to economics like Mises, Sowell and Hans-Hermann Hoppe

It is a lot shorter and to the point.

I plan to read it just not now. Too much other work to do

I've added it to my list

So, have you even read Marx's writings?

JUST R E A D E A D Honestly I don't know this book, never read, but I've come to dislike socialism simply by learning how it works and how human nature works, the closest I can get to helping you is describing why is socialism economically pants on head retarded.

Oh, I wasn't aware of that. But I guess I could also learn some things from anarcho capitalists

The TLDR version is as follows:
The economy is too complex for humans to manipulate it. A well intended economic policy would incontrovertibly lead to unintended outcomes.
Also, Supply and Demand.
Jason Green
Marxist Jews from the Frankfurt school escaped Hitler to America before ww2 started and proceeded to infect everyone through students in universities using critical theory to challenge everything and downgrade society. This has now spread as those students mature and still being promoted by Jews in media and government across the entire western world.
A bullet to the head. Administer one to yourself ASAP.

Muh Magical Free Market: The Book
Nathan Rogers
But seriously OP, read the damn book. You will be much more convinced.
The author makes some really good arguments against left wing economic policies without using obscure theories. The only theory he uses is the Supply and Demand model.
Aaron White
Liberals have the IQ and the attention span of goldfish
Henry Sanders
No, but according to all the conservatives I've spoken to my opinions are "Marxist"
Daniel Sanchez
Here's the short version: free market economics and fundamentalist Islam can be explained identically
The economy's good?
>praise the free market, it is solely responsible!
The economy's bad?
>The free market will fix it! Believe harder you stupid infidel!
Justin Johnson
WHO WILL WIN Mental work that millions of people go through every day when they decide whether to buy things AND mental work that thousands of entrepreneurs go through every week when they decide of prices of their products, where to buy their supplies, where to build next store and do a lot of other business decisions OR one cheeky government which's manpower can't go over 1% of population without strain on the country?!

Read it. If it starts to go full lolbertarian (e.g. "muh trickling down" or "rich (((jahbgivers))) give a shit about random American because muh free market", you can drop it.
Self-regulation arguments about the market are plain bullshit that is far from how it goes in real life.
Oliver Myers
Thanks for actually responding to my questions
Connor Flores
this book is way too simplified and biased. Read advanced economics
Eli Phillips
If it's basic, it shouldn't be.
Even better "It's not true communism, but state socialism" and "It's not true free market, it's crony capitalism" are, basically, the same argument used by different parties.
Aaron Anderson
I read about "sage" in the website's FAQ section
Colton Flores
Read this AND remember bubbles are when people create lots of profitable jobs and suddenly, due to oversaturation, they aren't profitable anymore... And the fact that socialism likes taxes, especially on the richest, which means that 1. EVERY person is punished for working AND people with the most ways of avoiding taxes are treated the harshest, which makes them avoid taxes the most. And that you like to give money to poor, which incentives them NOT to work, since they're given free money already! Single mothers? X money a month for each niglet! And the fact that, maybe, just maybe, some people ARE worse, ARE lazy, ARE not intelligent enough - their labour simply is NOT worth as much as that of others. And, perhaps most important, left is feminist, which makes women work (doubles the available labour on the market, halves the worth of the labour), which means they're financially independent, which enables them to engage in degenerative practices (like whoring). I do have to say that this isn't entirely women nature, it's partially culture. Thanks, leftists. Oh, and there's the fact that if before 1 person was supposed to feed the family, but now labour worth is halved, you need 2 people to work - women don't have the time to birth and raise children, educate them and care for them. That's all I can think of right now.
Kevin Harris
>good parts of society
So Jewish (((bankers))) and scum like Soros are the good parts of society, while average Joe that creates something actually useful instead of bubbles, crisises and misery, is a shit part of the society.
Ok.
Wyatt Johnson
HOLY SHIT
Thanks for the response. I hate to admit it but a lot of what you just said (even with the unnecessary racism) makes a lot of sense. Anything more you can add would be appreciated
Carter Edwards
>wanting tldr of an economics book
lmao
just read a chapter regularly every once in a while. you don't need to read the whole thing in one sitting.
Luis Harris
>So Jewish (((bankers))) and scum like Soros are the good parts of society, I'd actually gladly remove finance sector from economy, there's just no fucking point to it. It doesn't provide you with any service, it just gives you money, for money. If anything, I'd rather go with national, universal-central bank, with functions of printing and backing currency, storing people's money for free and giving pretty lenient loans (though I'd like the law to be very harsh on paying them back, because you're stealing your countrymen money). Capitalism is breddy gud, until the Jews work their way into banks and fucking start making money with money.
Aaron Harris
>A Liberal willing to listen >but clearly not willing to put any work in
William Hill
Racism or not, single motherhood with black/mixed child is surprisingly common. In fact it is so common that official statistics (US) say that 75% of black people are born out of wedlock. Three quarters of population. You know what? It wasn't that bad even 50 years ago. What happened? Welfare. No incentive to work since they get money for free. No incentive to marry since government gives money. No incentive to be functional members of society because THEY'RE PAID FOR BEING FUCKING NIGGERS
Adam Garcia
Lets talk about the minimum wage. By imposing a minimum wage, those people whose work output which are not worth the minimum wage would be fired. Mostly, these low skilled workers are the poor.
Since they are not able to work anymore, they will not be able to gain experiences therefore making them even less employable. In most cases, these poor people would much prefer to work for a shitty wage than not having a job at all.
All that minimum wage benefits are the middle class (people which would have better opportunities to be educated or trained), at the expense of the poor people.
Again, on the surface, minimum wage sound like something which would benefit the poor people, but really, it does the exact opposite.
Camden Bell
Holy fuck dude, you must literally do nothing but work and slam pussy, thats what you liberals do right? Radical!

Between Sowell, Milton Friedman and Walter Williams, you'll hopefully have a better understanding of why things could be better going this route.

There are more books written on any given subject than anyone can read in a lifetime. Selectivity is crucial. 'Read this 900 page tome that supports my worldview' is not a substitute for an argument.
Matthew Taylor
To add: >instate minimum wage on easily automated task >suddenly task is cheaper to automate than to staff And >you have to pay X money per month to your workers? >enjoy working half a month lol And >you have to provide workers working over X hours a month with certain benefits? >enjoy working half a month >except I can keep up the productivity by hiring twice the people lololol

You are a liberal because you are MENTALLY INFERIOR.

TLDR free markets work.
It's a great intro book. Even though it's not as rigorous as Man, Economy, And State or Human Action, but it makes up for this by including a lot of historical anecdotes which are the real heart of the book.
The emphasis on historical examples and pragmatic arguments is what makes it such a smooth redpill.
Joseph James
Almost all left-wing policies have the effect of increasing inflation, as well. This is mitigated somewhat by the Federal Reserve, but only because the Fed enshrines permanent inflation into the economy via inflation targeting.
>What is inflation?
Inflation is a sustained increase in prices. There are two main kinds: Demand and Input. Demand inflation is when the demand for goods rapidly exceeds the supply, causing prices to increase. Input inflation is when the cost for inputs rapidly increases, causing prices to increase. 99% of what the left does is cause input prices to increase. While there may be utility for causing input prices to rise (labor is an input, after all) those good jobs are paid for, effectively, by the poor. The left tries to do an end-run around this problem by redirecting money from the rich to the poor, which causes a negative feedback loop in the economy.
