The DDR is quite fascinating to me. Both in a military sense and a cultural one. Probably the closest that a Socialist state has come to succeeding (Though it still failed, as everyone Socialist nation has). That's despite the little help they had from the USSR after WW2 and despite the inherent flaws that come with a centrally planned economy. There were reforms being put in place by the 1980s that could have saved the DDR, but they came too late and by that point many people just wanted to be free of it entirely. The reputation of the Berlin Wall, Grenztruppen, and Stasi didn't help matters either.
Still, for what was supposed to be a bastard state of the USSR that was supposed to punish the Germans and act as a buffer zone, they could have done a lot worse. Reunification was probably the best option but I know a lot of Easterners disliked how they were pretty much just annexed into West Germany.
The DDR also understood the point of taking in migrants: To help them and educate them, then send them back to their original nation so they can improve it and become a trading partner, boosting both nations' economies.
