Imo stay away from evangelicals and baptists. Go to your local churches and see which one feels right or see what type of service you like better. Some you will find a genuine sense of community.

Most Baptists don't even consider themselves Protestants, but a separate branch of Christianity based on "sola scriptura", which is why many modern Baptists just call themselves "Bible Belivers". Protestantism is a branch of Catholicism, and Baptists/Evangelicals want nothing to do with the Catholic religion.

You could also skip all the mainstream versions of christianity. They're boring. Go gnosticism. Dwelve into the more unexplored, mysterious, and uncomforming side of early christianity. For me there were two things.
First, given a materialist universe I can't support the idea that I'm not an automaton without invoking the supernatural. Yet I don't feel like I'm an automaton -- I seem to be able to make choices. Therefore I can accept the supernatural.
Second, I love the story. I'm not a real Christian because I don't ask for salvation or eternal life. It seems greedy. But the suggestion that the all-powerful creator of the universe chose to live a life of suffering and humiliation -- my life -- is amazing.
If whatever granted me free will also paid the price for living in a world of free wills then that act of compassion is enough for me and I can find peace with whatever comes.
I think it's pretty clear from the Bible that you can't lose your salvation. The Bible says that "all have sinned and come short of the glory of God", so don't expect your own good works to get you to heaven, "for as it is written there is none righteous, no, not one."
