Galaxy Research conducted an online permission-based poll among 1,000 adult Christians in Australia from July 6 to 10. The survey found that 54 percent of the subjects support same-sex marriage and 49 percent of them are in favor of letting civil celebrants turn down same-sex couples on the basis of their personal belief. Meanwhile, 31 percent disagreed, and 21 percent are undecided, The Guardian detailed.
In addition, the poll found that 61 percent of the respondents did not want conservative groups to voice out their stance on same-sex marriage on behalf of all Australian Christians. Moreover, 77 percent believe that a free vote on the issue should be conducted as soon as possible, and that support for this move is highest (86 percent) among those 18 to 34 years old.
PFLAG national spokesperson Shelley Argent echoed the sentiments of the Christians regarding the free vote and said politicians should stop listening to conservative Christian groups' voices of opposition.
"Changes to the Marriage Act have always been made through the parliamentary process and should remain so," said Argent. "Politicians should stop paying so much attention to conservative Christian advocacy organisations which a majority of Christians feel don't represent them."
Galaxy Research held the poll almost two weeks after minister for defense industry Christopher Pyne stirred controversy after being recorded bragging that Australia would soon legalize same-sex marriage. Two days after the tape surfaced, it was discovered that two liberal politicians had been working on a bill to legalize gay marriage through MPs' conscience vote instead of a plebiscite.

Australia is not a direct democracy. Such actions are not required for other laws. The only reason to allow it would be in hopes that only old people reply to the postal vote and as such gay marriage fails. This is a duty of lawmakers, not the people. The people have elected their representatives already and the decision is in their hands.
