I believe it's less accurate to say that they retained insular qualities and more accurate to say inbreeding spawned qualities specific to the ashkenazim, qualities that aren't notably european or semitic. They do of course have semitic qualities as well but those are fairly diffused by now.

That's technically true, but there's always going to be some doubt. My rabbis explanation (and I'm paraphrasing here) was that true converts were always Jews and that they have "come back". But you must make sure that they really are true converts... So there's often at least going to be some doubt.

I'm personally not making judgments about what's white and what's not white since that's ideological and my interest in this topic is mostly genetic, but it was my impression that ashkenazim were much more european than middle eastern from a strictly genetic perspective - after all, they developed for a great many years in europe exclusively, absent the significant importation of semitic genetic material. The ashkenazim did inbreed to a rather significant extent but if as you posit their genesis came from converting European women to judaism, it's unlikely that that process ceased after a single generation. What's more likely is that by persisting in Europe over generations, European dna continued to trickle into their population at a much greater rate than semitic dna had the possibility to. 50/50 is extremely unlikely and I think factually incorrect.
