The "spirit of Europe" was alive until the World Wars and was strongest from the 1600s to the 1800s, i.e. after Luther's death and the Reformation. Protestantism does have its problems but they're mainly due offshoot groups like the Baptists or "progressive" reforms that occurred very recently and that affected even the Catholic church.
