>VIDEO: Last minutes of a Hezbollah armed drone before being shot down by HTS jihadists BEIRUT, LEBANON (10:15 P.M.) – The media wing of the Ha’yat Tahrir al-Sham terrorist group has released footage from a Hezbollah drone that their forces managed to shoot down and capture in western Qalamoun.
The footage, shot from the point of view of the drone’s camera, shows the armed drone launching off from a Hezbollah base on some high point in the rugged western Qalamoun countryside and flying off to target HTS forces.
The drone, flying from quite high up, drops its first mortar shell without event, however, after another minute, it takes on fire. Right before beginning a rapid uncontrolled spiral towards the ground, the drone manages to drop its last mortar round.

>German business lobby urges EU action against new US sanctions on Russia
A US move to expand sanctions against Russia may have an adverse impact on Europe’s energy security, hurt the German economy, and appears to favor American firms, says Volker Treier, chief economist at the German Chambers of Commerce and Industry (DIHK).
“The European Commission now must make efforts to shed light on the current situation, as well as resist the exterritorial effect of new US penalties. We get the impression the US pursues their own economicc interests,” he told in an interview with TASS.
“If German firms are banned from participating in gas pipeline enterprises, very important projects in the energy supply security sector can be halted. In that case, the German economy will be discernibly influenced,” Treier said.
The future of the Nord Stream-2 natural gas pipeline project from Russia to Germany is of particular concern to Europeans. Roughly a third of the European Union's natural gas supply still comes from Russia. The proposed expansion would double the existing pipeline's capacity and make Germany EU's main energy hub.
There are suspicions the US government is introducing the new sanctions against Russia to boost exports of American natural gas to the European market.
US sanctions to target Venezuelan constituent assembly -statement The US Treasury threatened on Wednesday to impose sanctions on anyone who joins Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro's controversial new congress after an election scheduled for Sunday. "Anyone elected to the National Constituent Assembly should know that their role in undermining democratic processes and institutions in Venezuela could expose them to potential U.S. sanctions,” Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said in a statement announcing sanctions against 13 current and former Venezuelan officials. EU top court rules that Austria, Slovenia can deport asylum seekers The European Court of Justice (ECJ) has ruled that refugees must continue to seek asylum in the first European country they reach, even in exceptional circumstances like the migrant crisis of 2015, CNN reported. The ECJ ruled Wednesday that Austria and Slovenia were entitled to deport two Afghan families and a Syrian who applied for asylum to Croatia, the first EU nation they entered. The court’s decision opens up the possibility of the deportation of hundreds of asylum seekers who arrived in Europe in 2015 and early 2016.

4 Russian military police battalions working in Syria safe zones Four battalions of the Russian military police formed in the Southern Military District are currently carrying out tasks in Syria’s de-escalation zones, Russian Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu said Wednesday. Earlier, Viktor Ozerov, the chairman of the defense and security committee of the upper house of Russia’s parliament, said that if necessary, Russia may boost its military police contingent in Syria for work in de-escalation zones, Sputnik reported. Initially, Russia deployed a military police unit to Aleppo at the end of 2016.

German Islamist preacher sentenced to 5-1/2 years in prison A German Islamist preacher was sentenced on Wednesday to 5-1/2 years in prison on four counts of supporting a foreign terrorist organization. Prosecutors said Sven Lau served as an “extended arm” of the Jaish al-Muhajireen wal-Ansar, an insurgent group made up of around 1,500 Chechen, Uzbek and Tajik fighters, which in 2015 pledged allegiance to the Nusra Front, then an Al-Qaeda affiliate. They said he collected funds and recruited fighters for the group, which is listed as a terrorist organization in Germany. Lau, a hardline Muslim preacher from Germany’s western state of North-Rhine Westphalia, had also turned up in the city of Wuppertal with nine supporters, all wearing orange vests emblazoned with the words ‘Sharia Police’. Prosecutors said this was an illegal gathering as he and eight others were trying to recruit others to join them. (Reuters)

Ukraine says UK court suspends judgment until appeal of $3bn Russia bond ruling A London court has agreed to a request from Ukraine to suspend judgment in a $3 billion Eurobond case brought by Russia until Kiev’s appeal against the verdict is concluded, Reuters reported Wednesday, citing the Ukrainian Finance Ministry. It said the appeal would be heard by the English Court of Appeal in January 2018. The Russian Finance Ministry confirmed the date of appeal, saying on Wednesday that the High Court of London was more specific about its verdict of March 29, 2017, made in favor of Russia and which bound Ukraine to pay £2.8 million to Russia in compensation of legal costs, TASS said. Russia bought Ukrainian Eurobonds worth $3 billion in December 2013. Ukraine defaulted on Eurobonds in December 2015.

Police in Jerusalem block journalists from parts of Old City Israel’s police force is acknowledging it is preventing journalists from entering parts of the Old City of Jerusalem as part of its efforts to lower tensions around a contested holy site. Police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld says Wednesday that “journalists are being prevented from coming in those specific areas where there have been disturbances and riots.” He says it is a decision made by the Jerusalem police district. The Foreign Press Association says journalists have been shoved and it has created “a dangerous situation” where accredited journalists were blocked from doing their jobs. (AP)
26 Afghan soldiers killed in Taliban assault - official An Afghan official says 26 soldiers have been killed in a blistering Taliban assault on an Afghan National Security base in southern Kandahar province. Mohammad Radmanish, Defense Ministry’s deputy spokesman, said Wednesday the Taliban assault overnight in Khakrez district left another 13 soldiers wounded. US pledges $140mn to Lebanon in Syrian refugee aid The US will give Lebanon an additional $140 million to assist Syrian refugees and the communities hosting them, the State Department said on Wednesday, during a state visit by the Lebanese Prime Minister. Lebanon is hosting at least 1.5 million Syrian refugees who have fled the more than six-year conflict next door and who now make up about a quarter of Lebanon’s population. This grant means the US has given Lebanon more than $1.5 billion in humanitarian assistance since the start of the Syrian conflict in 2012, a State Department statement said. (Reuters)

Kurdish official says US role essential in post-ISIS Syria The Kurdish-led effort to secure Raqqa once it is liberated from Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL) will require long-term US political and financial support for the battered city’s governance and reconstruction, a senior Syrian Kurdish official said Tuesday. In an interview with AP in the Kurdish-administered town of Kobani, Ilham Ahmed said the US role in the fight against IS must not end with the liberation of the Raqqa but should continue as a guarantor of stability until a political future for the war-torn country is charted. Ahmed is the co-president of the Syrian Democratic Council, the political wing of the US-backed Kurdish-led force. “If the Americans want to protect the security of these areas… they must continue until a democratic system is built in Syria,” she said.

US sanctions vote ‘hostile’ - top Iran negotiator Iran’s top nuclear negotiator said on Wednesday that new sanctions approved by the US House of Representatives were “a hostile measure” that breached Washington’s commitments under a 2015 nuclear deal. “The ongoing action… is very clearly a hostile measure against the Islamic republic of Iran,” Deputy Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said, according to the ISNA news agency. Araghchi led the negotiating team that agreed the deal with world powers in 2015, by which Iran agreed to strict limits on its nuclear program in exchange for an easing of sanctions. “These are America’s commitments. What the Congress is doing is against these commitments and for sure will be met with a reaction from Iran,” Araghchi said. (AFP)

Top EU court keeps Hamas on EU terror list, refers case back The EU’s top court ruled on Wednesday that Palestinian Islamist movement Hamas should remain on the EU terrorism blacklist, referring the case back to a lower court. Judges at the European Court of Justice (ECJ) overruled the General Court’s view of 2014 that the 28-nation bloc had insufficient evidence to maintain asset freezes and travel bans on Hamas. That court found that the listing was based on media and Internet reports rather than solid legal arguments. However, the ECJ said on Wednesday that a decision by a competent authority was only required for an initial listing, with no such condition for subsequent retention. (Reuters)

Statement condemning shelling of Russia’s embassy in Syria blocked in UNSC - Russian mission Russia’s permanent mission in the UN said that its draft statement condemning a recent mortar shelling of the Russian diplomatic compound in Syria and calling it a terrorist attack was thwarted in the UN Security Council. In a statement Tuesday, the mission said that it was “pointless” to continue working on the draft after some member states suggested removing “all important provisions” from the document “under a far-fetched pretext of the lack of evidence on the terrorist nature of the attacks." It added that such an approach indicates that these countries aim to spare militants who would be of use to implementing “destructive geopolitical plans" in the war-torn country.

>VIDEO: Key gains made as Tiger Forces roll on towards Deir Ezzor BEIRUT, LEBANON (10:50 P.M.) – The Syrian Arab Army’s elite Tiger Forces continue their massive broad-front sweep across the desert flat-lands of southeastern Raqqa, today liberating two more key sites along the way to Deir Ezzor.
After liberating the village of Rasm Sulieman yesterday afternoon, the Tiger Forces have since moved on to secure the village of al-Kharrar and the nearby hilltop of Tall al-Kharrar.
Of particular importance in all of this is the hilltop of Tall al-Kharrar because it overlooks the villages of Zawr Shammar and Ghanim Ali.
The entire push in this direction is part of an eastwards swing towards from the desert expanses towards the lush Euphrates farming belt which straggles the length of the great river.
