Real problem with post-soviet economies are 70 years of soviet union. Now, economic growth is lagging demographic patterns. Before revolution, Russian Empire was placed at the same level of economic development as Japan. Compare two countries now. Russia did not use the oppotunity gape provided by demographic transition because of retarded communist policies. Thus, Russia irredeemable. I believe, good institutions and correct economic policy won't handle poor economic perfomance. Ukraine is even more desperate. It is a country with demography of developed countries and a literally african economy.
