For anyone who hasn't, you should check out the Foxfire series of books. Compiled from the old foxfire magazine, they are both a look back in time and an instruction manual on how to survive without a nanny state taking care of you.
A very small sample of the things covered are how to make soap, guns, shoes, chairs, baskets, butter, and shingles. How to build a home, butcher an animal, hunt an animal, train dogs, train kids, and general all-purpose knowledge of how to survive.
Our great strength is a strong core of self-reliance. Remember, the more you can do yourself, and the more you can do as a community, the less you need a bloated government for.

It's an eye-opener, to realize that we used to be so much more independent. The stronger you are as an individual, the more you can share and build with your community and family. The more you all can do together, the less you need to depend on outside sources.
I think that's one of the biggest bits of the midwest. We still get what family and community means, even if it'd gotten corroded. Would you rather go to the market for eggs, or get them from a friend? Sharing and mutual support makes for stronger communities.

Dixie isn't different in that regard. My dad grows stuff in the garden and usually has excess we don't need. He ends up selling it cheap to people or giving it for free to people down on their luck. If someone needs lawn mower parts or need their air conditioner fixed they come to my dad and trade with him or pay him a bit instead of calling big outfits. My uncle needed to clean out his house so in exchange for helping him he let us have any of the stuff he didn't want. My grandfather's lawn mower broke down so we mowed his lawn for couple weeks until my uncle fixed it. No need for Uncle Sam to get involved. Family helps family, neighbor helps neighbor. To an extent of course. You don't let yourself get exploited by leeches.
tl;dr: work out of garages/homes and take trusted apprentices to learn so they can carry on and teach as well. peer-to-peer parts and assembly system.

There ya have it. We're all so isolate and so stand-offish. Nobody trusts anyone else anymore, everyone's either worried about offending someone, or is looking for something to be offended about. it's so rare to find people willing to bond together, and that's deeply sad.
There's a lot of reasons why, but i think big parts of it is this migration to the new wave of urban life, and the shift of demographics. We're living in ways that don't really mesh with a tight-knit and helpful community, and doing so with people who don't really share the same ideals and values.
It's sad, really. Which is a good chunk of why this is happening. It's not necessarily that everyone wishes to fuck off from the union, it's just that unless the US can unfuck itself rather fast, we're going to need to band together to keep shit together.

I live in a small-ish town, wife comes from an even smaller one, and it's just different. You can wave to people, and they smile and wave back. You can strike up a conversation and end up a few hours later with a friend for life you met at a bus stop. If someone says "hey, i have way too many tomatoes, you want some?" you just accept, you don't worry about why, or how they are, or whatever.
We used to have lives, back when we could trust one another. Back before we got isolated and taught to be afraid of reaching out. It's part of why this movement is a thing, a lot of us know, deep down, something is wrong. First step is being aware of it.

It's already there, in a lot of ways. Production and expansion is great, but endless growth is at best a pipe dream, and at worst a fast track to destruction. I've seen it all over, bigger and denser packed farms, and tighter regulation and controls on smaller, private setups.
That's the hope, this is just the start of things. It'll take time to work the angles and such, but for now just having some kind of pride is a good start. Most of us are so broken down it's hard to muster up any excitement for anything. if fooling around with flags and songs helps us have pride again, and from that pride try to make things better, so be it.
It's unreal. This life we're making in the big cities just doesn't work. Or rather, it doesn't work if everyone gets chopped up and isolated. 1) Look for open government positions - zoning boards, city planning commissions, city councils, etc are volunteer positions in 99% of towns and they usually have a hard time finding people to fill vacancies.
2) If you don't want to get involved in politics, try addressing the people who are. Most zoning board and city planning commission meetings are open to the public. If you're worried about something, come to a meeting and voice your concerns.
3) If you own a local business or have some weight in your community, use it, lobby people, apply pressure. I get approached by local business owners all the time expressing concerns.
4) For fuck's sake be subtle about shit. You're not going to win over any support for shutting down a new apartment complex or a gentrified neighborhood or whatever by talking about white nationalism or posting pepes on the city planning website. Focus on economic arguments as much as possible. Low-income and Section 8 housing kills property values.
5) Politics is all about quid pro quo. Support someone on something small and they'll support you on something later on. Help a local business or property-owner out and now they owe you a favor and can be convinced to speak on behalf of something that needs community support. Play the game.

Most of the people I've seen funding these kinds of projects while I've been on the board are out-of-town investors, rental firms and shit like that who know they can just drop a few $100K buying up some old single-family homes, demolish them, build a cheap apartment complex, advertise it to nogs looking to move out of Chicago or Milwaukee or Detroit or wherever, and then rake in a few years of Section 8 vouchers. Simply get the board to deny their applications, and if they persist drag the process out as much as possible, make them jump through hoops every time they reapply, then deny them again. Make it too expensive and too much hassle to be worth their time and they'll go somewhere else.
Political groups I haven't dealt with as much. The town got visited by HUD a year and a half ago and the city council made a big show of saying they'd try to reform things. Best thing you can do there is stall. Any time city council issues a deadline for a response on something you're trying to stop - wait until the deadline passes and they have to call to remind you, then ask for more time. Always ask for more time, more information, more reports, more surveys, etc. If you can delay shit long enough for offices or groups to lose interest or lose track of you, you'll be fine.
