A Mountain View High School soccer player drowned Sunday evening in the Chattahoochee River at Settles Bridge Park in Suwanee.
Perez Tamfu, a senior at the school, was unaccounted for after jumping into the river. Tamfu was at the river with a group of friends when the incident occurred just before 8 p.m.
According to Gwinnett Fire Cpt. Tommy Rutledge, Tamfu resurfaced once and appeared to be in distress.
“One of his friends and a second river patron initially tried to rescue the man, but said that he became combative and went back underwater and did not resurface,” Rutledge said.
Mountain View head boys soccer coach Sean Wickham said three of his other players were directly involved in the rescue attempt of Tamfu. Tamfu just couldn’t handle it.", Wickham said.
“To say they did everything they could (to save him), they almost did more than they should have. They did more than they should have because they put their own lives at risk trying to save him.”

There wasn't one talk. We grew up in Oakland back before the tech boom when someone was getting shot to death every day. My parents warned me every day, park somewhere light, don't walk through residential streets. Don't go to any parties west of 580. Don't go to that boy's house, his brother is in a gang. Don't wander when track practice gets out, stay right by the gate underneath the lights with your coach until we get there to pick you up. Don't go downtown tonight, they'll be rioting and chimping out over some perceived abuse.
The really serious talks came after tragedies. A family friend was beaten to death a block away from my highschool. A neighbor shot his wife. A gang broke into a nearby house and duct taped the husband while they raped the father. Those talks aged me a lot.
I wish there was more than one "talk." I wish black parents talked to their kids every day. I wish they explained how the actions of their peers have represented their race, how they exist in a culture designed to drag them down, how they should stay away from drugs and premarital pregnancy and stay in school.
