Stalin was very nationalistic(funny, he wasn't from Russian). He was doing what he thought was best for the USSR, but not globally directed. He was paranoid, and this resulted in massive purges. But as you say, he may have been poisoned. At the time of this death he was purging doctors. So was Stalin a good guy or a bad guy? Well he was complicated. He wasn't the leader in anyway of the original revolution. He was a writer. He was smart though, so after the death of Lenin, he made sure to position himself to become the Premier. . Well, my grandpa was not an anti-stalinist even though he was put into a gulag and his brother was shot. After his death and when destalinization began they tried to blame everything on him.
