The health care system here is fucked up. Even if you are near a hospital you will only get covered by in network hospitals, even then thaey might send you somewhere else. My wife is pregnant and we live 5 min away from an in network hospital but they won't let her deliver there, instead they are forcing us to deliver at a hospital that is an hour away without traffic possibly 2 hours if traffic is bad (which it always is depending on the time of day). When we talked with them about this they said, "Many people get hotels near here when they are reaching their due date". Right, a baby is already expensive like we really need to be paying for a hotel for two weeks or more just because they can't get their shit together. If we lived somewhere rural I would understand that more but we don't, we live in a big city. My wife even tried to look into if she could stay at her parents for the end of her pregnancy since they live 10 min away from a hospital that will deliver babies but the insurance company still won't cover it since its an out of network hospital. Also they charge $400 for every ultrasound even though they state that this is a necessity not a luxury thing to do these days, yet the insurance doesn't cover it.

I quite like the health system we have here in Australia. It's not perfect, but it works. A functioning public healthcare system in which you will be treated relatively promptly, for free, if you come in to hospital in an emergency. On the other hand, we also have a well established private system, where if you (or your insurance) pays, you get faster care, your choice of treating specialist, nicer hospitals, etc. And we still have about half the per capita spending on healthcare that the USA does.
That said, there are still plenty of ungrateful shits around. Every time some asshole complains that his operation was delayed by a day because we had no operating theater time left to operate, I really want to just ask them "so how much are you paying to be here again?"

The Obamacare marketplace exchange plans have horrible networks. If you're young and healthy, you're generally better off getting a plan that isn't on the marketplace. Even without the obamacare silver tax credit it's generally cheaper to get a plan elsewhere if you're younger and a guy, and you'll get a better network.

Premium doesn't really have anything to do with how good a plan is. I pay $150/mo for my own coverage and I have a $300 deductible and a strong nationwide network (Aetna Choice POS II), but that's because my work is paying (on average) $10,000/yr for people on that plan.
In New York, Health Republic of NY offered good plans with low rates and a good network. Turns out they were paying high access fees to access a network and what they took in for premiums couldn't cover care, and they went out of business.

This can be the case, but people should be well aware that you get what you pay for. I've been working on a plastic surgical unit (public plastic surgery, meaning no cosmetic surgeries, just reconstructive/trauma surgery) which goes through about 100-120 surgeries a week. For the more straightforward operations, it really is like a production line - Come in, get your operation, home same day, see you in a week in our overloaded clinic with 100 other patients to see in about 4 hours. Most people are pretty understanding that they have to wait and that they're getting all this shit for free anyway, but you still get plenty of assholes whining that they haven't been seen fast enough.
Though prevention is always better than a cure, and most of this would be avoidable is people stopped punching lawnmowers and kept their hands away from moving parts on power tools.
