Depends what you're going for. There are nice areas up North which are very affordable (UK house prices are insane). If you've got money- Surrey, Kent, Sussex, bits of Essex.
Avoid London. It's unaffordable to live in unless you want to live in one of the shit areas full of recent third world immigrants. And even then it's expensive. The only people who live in London are people who are from there originally and won't move, immigrants and people who need to live there for work. Everyone else just takes a train in.

The free channels (BBC) are what you're paying for with the TV license. They force you to pay for those channels in order to be able to get the rest, it's how public tv is funded. No TV ads though, which is why there's a fee. It's retarded though and will eventually be scrapped.

Same as everywhere, varies with the police force and individual, how stressed they are, how dangerous the area you're in is, etc. In London or like Northern Ireland, they might be a bit on edge. I just got back from holiday there with my gf and dog. its the Northern English rural charm mixed with mountains and lakes ect that i love and everyone is super nice and goes out of their way to talk to you ect. I stayed in Grasmere. Expensive, but there are lots of cheap unused farmhouses/barns that a lot of people buy and then convert into a house.
