The idea of war is to kill the enemy with the least amount of casualties on YOUR side. It was obvious that the Japanese weren't going to surrender and the invasion of Japan has been estimated to have cost more than a MILLION of American lives.
While I hate the idea of killing civilians with nuclear weapons, proportionality should be a guideline in war. While some people think that it was "immoral" to drop the atomic bombs I also think it's equally as immoral to not use whatever means necessary to save the lives of your own soldiers.

From my knowledge the 250k number was the expected casualties in the first month, not for the entire campaign to invade the Japanese islands.
Over the months (or even years) it might have taken to subdue the Japanese on their home soil would have cost at LEAST a million American lives.

...and there conditions included bullshit like retaining all conquered territory, disarming their army themselves and retaining the Japanese National Polity (i.e. the Nationalist government, Kempeitai, etc.)
These were conditions which couldn't be a accepted by the Allies and were explicitly rejected in the Potsdam Declaration.
The Japs agreed to surrender but only if there was no US occupation afterwards. Personally, I think that would have been a retarded thing to allow.
