Can some Masons here tell me what the flying fuck is going on? I'm 27 years old. When I was in High School I applied for the Masons. I just filled out an online contact form. Not apply, whatever you want to call it. That was almost 10 years ago.
Very recently I just got a job making a pretty good deal of money, 6 figures. Recently I received an email from the lodge in my local HS town asking if I was still interested.
I called the guy, and he said that I had slipped through the cracks, and that it was probably a clerical error to never reach out to me. He let me know of a lodge near my current city and told me I should reach out to them.
What the flying fuck is going on? I know a little about hte Masons and this seems irregular as fuck.
Its the highest honor they can give you. It means you are part of a family and a crew. It means nobody can fuck around with you it also means you can fuck around with anybody so long as they aren't also a member.

As a mason (not a high ranking memeber, but still) to be recruited like that is quite rare.
Although I don't think it's played out exactly like you think. Someone maybe knew you, or knew of you. Either through your social media, your family or something like that. I've never seen someone randomly just be recruited like that, but I'm not saying it doesn't even happen.
Just fyi you won't be seeing anything strange or suspicious until you're much older and much higher established within the masons. I do like it though, it's a place where you can speak about politics and such things without fear of being ridiculed, because everyone (nearly) is on the same page. You get invited to golf outings, drinks and just social meetings all the time. If you ever need a job or anything, there's always someone who can help you.
I like it, though don't get any of your ideas from Hollywood films. It's basically a gentlemen's club for educated people.

Mason here, we're shit at recruiting. Technically we're banned from recruiting people. People are supposed to join because they are sincerely interested in us, not because someone convinced them to do it. Because of this there are no formal recruitment programs for Masonic lodges, and we get little practice in building our numbers. So yeah this is irregular, because there is no regular recruitment program.
What's probably happened was the secretary of the lodge you sent a contact email too overlooked it, or ignored it outright. Lodge secretaries are elected by the lodge and unpaid, so they don't have a lot of incentive to do too much. Then a new secretary got elected, realized the prior guy never got back to you and reached out. In fact, the most likely explanation was that the old lodge secretary died. My experience with lodges is that the most active members and officers are old guys who have the free time to run shit. My old lodge secretary was a guy in his 70s who had the job for about 20 years because no one else wanted to do it.

It's not so complicated. I am a "Master" in european lodges, and the 33rd degree is only a way to have more and more power in other lodges. You are invited to dinners, sport celebrations, conferences, shows, etc. It's just a matter of power and influence. If you want it, and surely when you access this degree, you want to, if you want, you can contact politics or whatnot and discuss with them. This is the only influence we can have.

I've been a mason for 10 years now. He's telling you the truth. Nothing shady happening here. He saw you were interested at one time and decided to reach out thinking he had nothing to lose by trying. This isn't really surprising since membership is dropping all over the country. Lodges are having to merge or close down entirely because our generation of young adults is more interested in drinking and video games than they are social clubs and meeting new people. If you decide to join you aren't going to be given any secret government conspiracy information or any other type of nonsense. The only secrets they have are the words and handshakes they use to identify each other. It's more or less a social group that will likely have some aspect of helping the needy in the community. My lodge, for example, hands out food and presents to needy families on Christmas. If this sounds like something you'd be interested in go ahead and give it a shot.
