Why isn't this discussed more often around here? The Nazis developed what was called the “Fischer-Tropsch” process, whereby they produced synthetic oil. This is the only reason they were able to stay in the war for as long as they did, once Hitler's access to stable sources of oil was lost. What makes this interesting is that the process gives us insight into how the EARTH ITSELF produces petroleum:

Since we were kids, we've heard the dogma that oil is a finite resource, peak oil, etc, etc. In reality, the Earth is constantly producing new petroleum reserves. On top of that, human beings are capable of producing synthetic oil, but because oil from the grounds is currently cheaper, we don't really develop the technology. Thoughts?

I think synthetic Oil might be cheaper too when you factor in all the expenses caused by drilling up "natural" oil reserves from the ground, then refining them and all the shipping that comes that occurs due to this process.
Is creating synthetic oil energy efficient? Like does the process burn more energy than it produces?

It is used. I believe Sasol has these plants and technology. Not sure if they're still made all the time but I know a few were built in the 80s. Most people call it GTL or gas to liquids plants.

A basic wiki says methane to syngas to gasoline process is only 60% efficient. That's not so good. You might as well say that means there's a 40% markup on that gasoline or so.
It takes natural gas / fuel gas to fire up the heaters that produce the synthesis gas from natural gas and then you have to run this shit through multiple fixed bed reactors and do your separation trains...
There's a shit ton of natural gas everywhere but this process just isn't economically viable until the conventional sources for crude become cost prohibitive.

"Futures" and algorithm traders can affect the price of oil but the main driver is still the oil producers. Oil manipulation occurs through OPEC cartel and how they set the price of oil from limiting their output intentionally...the issue being, they've wanted a high price of oil for a long while and GTL was still not viable enough at $100/bbl of oil. Overproducing has brought the price down to what we see today (which isn't good if you wanted GTL).
Put simply, GTL should be more competitive at higher oil barrel prices, yet it never became a big process even at $100/bbl. We are now floating at $40-$50. There isn't any manipulating by oil companies to keep GTL out, they would be the same companies to build these plants to make gasoline...refining a crude oil is simpler than reacting natural gas to gasoline in an energy intense process, so that's what is done.
It's easy, if you control the production you control the price, that's how they manipulate the prices.
