There were many things wrong with East Germany. Snitches everywhere, people vanishing left and right into gulags or graves, bad economy, pollution and so on. Oh, and due to the "everybody is guaranteed a job and guaranteed money" countless employees started slacking and not fulfilling their duties because they knew they would just get another job.
However there were also great things about DDR. Fine education system, dirt cheap book stores where you could get high quality literature. And the government kinda cared about the people. During the coffee crisis their government reacted just great:
