Hitler listened to his generals' advice on rushing to Moscow instead of Hitler's original (and CORRECT) plan to taking USSR's resources and avoiding Moscow until 1942. German Generals wanted to ignore the Kiev pocket in their rush to Moscow which would have left their rear open to attack. Hitler had to intervene and wipe it out.
Hitler wasn't a military mastermind but neither were his generals. They made many mistakes themselves, some of which they passed off to Hitler after the war.
