That may have been par the course for the far left back then but it would have been social suicide for most people. Just like it is now.

If someone investigates the identity of a potential terrorist or criminal but keeps that evidence confidential until/unless it comes time to arrest, we call them intelligence like the FBI/CIA/MI6.
If someone investigates the identity of someone who expressed a negative opinion, belief, or non-criminal action in order to uncover, shame, denigrate the individual socially or cause their relationships/employment to be ruined?
