I've found many Europeans are obsessed with bad news in the US because it makes them feel better about their own political system/policies. Every bad thing that happens in America is the fault of guns and lack of healthcare to the average European. Most often forget how large the population of the US is to the average European country. People in Germany are self-righteous rule followers. They are tidy, neat, clean and hard working. Their idea of fun is obnoxious and amounts to beer drinking and eating. Germany TV is boring and every attempt to make it more like Hollywood is cringe worthy.
However, this "almost perfect" world comes at high price. There is a high pressure to live a mediocre life, do things according to the pre-defined rules and be a good German. Personal wealth is blamed and shamed, although German have almost the highest standard of living in the whole Europe. There is enormous pressure to buy "green", support "green" industries, be liberal and parrot whatever states says. Hierarchy is everything. Germans believe in "free" education, high taxes and "free healthcare" and these things have worked well so far. There is no good service industry in Germany, it is extremely bad. German weather is catastrophic. So when an average German comes to NY or LA they have a cultural shock. People are much more free, it is ok to be rich, it is ok to buy whatever you like, there are beaches, sun and fun, unrestricted consumerism and capitalism. So if both Germany and USA are cats, Germany is the domesticated cat that never left the apartment while USA would be a wild street smart cat that knows the neighborhood. Both has advantages and disadvantages.

I never mentioned economic freedom which is still pretty good in the USA. USA companies are taxed a lot, yes we know it. There are many other things that constitute freedom, for example 1st amendment. There is no such a thing in Germany and that is a huge issue, much bigger than few percentages of the taxes. Then there is a 2nd amendment, doesn't exist in Germany. USA culture is the dominant culture of the world. The only band outside of Germany that anyone remotely recognizes is Rammstein and maybe few other smaller bands and DJs. USA dictates everything. I am sure that the pressure to donate to "green causes" reached absurd levels in Germany. Did I mention the EU? Everything you do has to be approved by EU. Shall we mention R&D? Almost all new things are coming exclusively from US. 50% of all new drugs and medical devices are discovered in the USA. The best German people almost as a rule move to US. Let's be honest, Europe is inferior compared to US and people in Europe know this, therefore the obsession. Did I mention that almost all post WWII freedom in EU is predicated on strong US military?
