I was born at the end of the 90's and of course being a child in the early 2000's was great because I was a child, but for oldfags who were adults in the 80's, 90''s or very early 2000's...were things way better back then? Was it 9/11 which changed everything?

Yep 89 here, old enough to remember pre 9/11 really clearly. Flying used to fun and easy, life was better, less people gave a fuck about 24 hour news. There was no "muslim" or "refugee" problems. There was a "mexican" problem but the euro homeland seemed safer and it wasnt as bad then so people just weren't as concerned.
mass communications in the 90s really didn't work the way they do now. people used the news differently- they didn't use it as an ideological weapon. they'd watch the local news and then vegetate to random talk shows, soap operas, whatever was on TV. people spoke to each other for no reason at all sometimes. racism didn't exist- it was pretty much extinguished, though the klan had small rallies (that were not very well-covered or acknowledged). niggers had thick skin and couldn't give a fuck what whitey was doing in the 90s, they just smoked their reefer, drank their liquor, and did other nigger things without bothering anybody (unless you went into their neighborhoods). they had their own schools of degeneracy but this was before magnet schools and bussing whites into bad schools to "even things out"

I'm 30. 9/11 happened when I was a sophomore in high school and it really did change a lot about our attitudes...made people MUCH more security minded, it opened up our knowledge about a part of the world nobody cared about, it introduced us to radical Islam, etc. All the obvious stuff.
But actually I suspect it simply accelerated what was going to happen anyway. The mid 90s were one of those unique and fantastic times to exist in America that only come around every 40-50 years. I realize you're Australian but maybe that applies to your country as well.
It's sort of hard to encapsulate. You had this great moderation of political beliefs, prosperity, sense of community, relative ignorance about shitty things happening in the world, cool movies and music, optimism for what the internet would become, vidya that was almost entertaining enough to keep you from going outside to play basketball or have a water fight. Nothing like that lasts forever. Even without 9/11 you'd have the anthrax scare, the Madrid bombings, etc. Shit would have changed eventually, we'd all lose trust, etc.

People back then focused more on their own personal interests and occasionally some news story would capture everyone's attention for a while but it was never anything dangerous or personal. (Think baby Jessica stuck in a well or Tonya Hardening beating up that other figure skater with the horse teeth). These kind of things were amusing and odd but no one lost sleep over it.

Video game systems that were way more powerful than PC's and some were even utilized in military simulation utilizing powerful processing units that were linked by a burgeoning internet. Things got rather interesting once the social paradigm as a whole began to have the ability to posture behind closed doors - at a rapid rate constantly connected by modems, endless cable channels and the ability to communicate across the planet without ever meeting. You can certainly bring up convenience, but once computation doubles one can basically proclaim " I have made it to the future, I am in control". 9/11, the new security epoch and the 21st-century hyper-connectedness have made that all a delusion.
I feel as though the nostalgia of the 20th century has burned into our minds so well because it was so well marketed and orchestrated. We even marketed our world wars and atrocities to the click of a galvanizing soundtrack that spans the time our youth. Every decade is a racket.

Well my parents used to talk about how people actually talked to each other. And that people went out and did shit. Shit was cheaper as well back then and they would have to buy cigarettes for their parents. No one had a mobile phone and me who essentially grew up in the 00s still have vivid memories of running around in the neighborhood, making up shitty games and playing around with random kids.
For me the big shift in my era was the release of the iPhone/iPod touch, it was marketed as a status symbol and kids who used to be fun and liked to play around suddenly were staring at their screens half the time. Social media as well seemed to cause a big problem with it essentially being a giant dick measuring competition (causing me to unironically spiral into depression).
Then ofcourse since social media is an endless dick measuring competition, we got all the fucking assholes showing off their lives on the internet. And since the assholes were cool and even the biggest losers have always dreamt of being cool people started to copy those assholes which in turn leads to even more assholes.
Life became a competition, a struggle and a race. It used to be about having fun, seeing sights.
