We took on some uni grad guy at a shit wage. Numpty couldn't even troubleshoot basic shit, or even know how to find out the IP on a Windows machine. The fuck are they teaching these people? He didn't complete his probationary period, and from then on my boss at the time didn't bother setting on people from Uni as they lacked required skills. Most people can't motivate themselves due to poor concentration and reading skills, which I think is vital for intelligence.

It very much depends how you are defining intelligence. Is it some hard metiric like an engine's horsepower rating, or something more abstract?
To use the engine example, a 500hp engine still is even if it's not currently connected to a vehicle, but is also at that point useless so does it matter?
Ultimately no. So you can have a powerful engine, but if you never use it then you're no better than some beaten up vauxhall corsa runabout.
The disagreement is semantic though and misses the point. Rather than berating a guy for saying he has a 500hp engine and would like to know how better to use it, saying "oh whoop de doo you have 500hp. cunt". Instead tell them what they are asking you to tell them i.e how to do better.

For me that is to do with reading and writing skills, something that is learnt at an early age. I don't think there is anything to be prideful about being able to put "less the amount of work in". All what matters in the real world is completing tasks. The majority of students I've seen do well in dissertations were the low intelligence who put the most effort it.

Broadly speaking people who do better also tend to have put more work in. I'm convinced there's a huge positive correlation between IQ and motivation, which makes one question exactly which aspect is most important.
Its also true that learning in general allows someone to pick something up quicker in the future, because you already understand the mechanisms by which learning takes place and the way in which a particular area of the field works.
That's just my experience in my education and subsequent research, so I could be an outlier here.
