Do you think Orwell would still be a Socialist today given what we know now about Socialism?
Do you think Orwell would still be a Socialist today given what we know now about Socialism?
yeah because he knew it all back then already
Almost certainly not. He'd have learned of the failures, the horrors against man and realised that there is no point in trying now.
Not as we understand it today.
>hates authoritarianism
>is socialist
umm no sweetie
Reading this book was just so annoying for me. He completely eviscerates Socialists in general, but then he closes with "well and so Socialism is the only cure to all of our problems and we'll have to change our propaganda methods if we ever hope to succeed and defeat Fascism".
He never presents any sort of logical argument for Socialism or how it's supposed to actually work realistically.
He also seems to completely misrepresent what Socialism is about. He claims it's about "liberty". WTF? He also says that the "world is rich enough that we can all live like princes". How can someone as educated as Orwell be this stupid?
I had so many WTF moments throughout this book.
I didn't want to believe he was a socialist either but if you read this book and assuming he's not pulling some sort of elaborate ruse he definitely is
Which is baffling considering that he also wrote 1984. I can only assume he has some sort of fundamental misunderstanding as to what Socialism entails. Like the 19 year old who thinks "Socialism, that's like, equality right? Equality is good!"
that book isn't the one to read if you wanted to hear his reasons for supporting socialism
Yeah I know, but it was still annoying to read over and over how Socialism is the cure to all the world's ills with no explanation given
What book should I read for that though? He doesn't seem to have a book called "Why Socialism is Da Bomb"
Dumb faggots stop getting your information from Wikipedia. Orwell renounced these views after fighting in the Spanish civil war as seeing what a bunch of horrible cunts the communists were
Source ?
I got this information from his own writing
Maybe if I had read his Wikipedia article I would actually be more informed
Education
He was socialist but against Stalin and the USSR.
1984 was a critique of Stalinism, so yeah, sure.
inb4 Stalin wasn't a socialist.
He got shot during the Spanish civil war. During his recovery he saw that socialism and communism was a meme and totally disingenuous. After that he wrote animal farm and 1984. Anyone who thinks those books support socialism is a soft brained moron
again do you have a source for this ?
I too would like to know in what book he wrote about this, if there is one
Orwell was a weird mix of progressive and reactionary. He hated pretty much anything he perceived as authoritarian but aside from that was relatively normal for his time. He'd probably throw up if he saw London overrun by Pakistanis and whatever else. I actually read a fairly brutal piece recently by some guy who pretty much considered Orwell the embodiment of the Eternal Anglo meme, mostly using 'Shooting an Elephant' and his dislike of Catholicism as proof of this. I don't think that Orwell joined the Spanish Civil War specifically to kill nuns and priests like this guy did but he did have points. Orwell was far less on the cutting edge of progressive politics than people think.
yes
you can tell he was completely willingly retarded about the fact and that book clearly shows that and it is a great book showing how phony the most vocal proponents of socialism are
read any shit from the guardian or NYTimes about this book and they laud it as a great book supporting socialism
its like no one reads the 2nd half of it
its like Orwell didn't even read what he was writing
Orwell is so whiney
"wahhhh working class people don't like me because I'm more upperclass but upperclass are all fags....I want to be working class but never will"
This book in a nutshell:
>working class people smell like shit and live in garbage dumps and are disgusting mongrels
>upperclass people championing socialism are all faggots
>oh well, I guess socialism is cool
He'd probably still go "MUH NOT REAL SOCIALISM" like he did during his later life.
The commies in the Spanish civil war were trotskyists and Orwell had a hard on for Trotsky before he volunteered. Once he saw the reality of how things play out under communism he did a 360 and walked away. I mean ffs animal farm was written in 1945 when Stalin was still big buddies with the west and chilled at yalta and Potsdam, there was no public awareness of Stalinist atrocities at that time. This liberal rewriting of history is pathetic.
Also socialism in the early 20th century was very much a different beast to how it is now. British socialism was in favor of removing the House of Lords and creating a social security type pension program, ideas we have come to accept as pretty standard
ITT: Sup Forums brainlets fail to even understand what socialism is.
Whether you're for against it, you should actually read up on what it is, how it works ect, you'll have a better understanding of your enemy that way.
Saucefags need the rope. Stop being a lazy cunt and do a bit of research and reading. Honestly 5 minutes of google will give the answers, you shouldn't rely on their people's sources anyway
Probably an anarchist like he was back then.
>trusting the Democratic People's Search Engine of Google to give you unbiased results
>not using ixquick instead
>POUM, although a Marxist organisation, sided with the anarchists. As a result they were demonised by the communists who printed posters and leaflets denouncing POUM and accusing them of collaboration with the fascists. Later, after he’d escaped Spain, Orwell would note with anger and dismay how these accusations had become The Truth in the European press. The “memory hole” of Nineteen Eighty-Four was born during those terrible Barcelona May Days.
Amazing
Yes
Anti-authoritarian socialists are in fact, the worst and most incoherent of all socialists.
I think what people forget is that Orwell was an advocate for socialism in Britain, and it was because he believed his country to be unique in temperament. He acknowledged that it would never happen in a country like America.
Why did we cart in so many niggers again?
Yes but he would be like the Mahatma Gandhi type libertarian Socialism not the neo-Stalinist SJW bullshit.
no
