At the lower levels, it is certainly a bastion of nationalist ideals, and of devotion to ones country. But the command has the same problem our political class has, in that they will risk the Army's operational ability to pursue political vanity projects (women in front line roles etc).

And I'm an officer cadet at the University Officer training corps, from what I know it's not as competitive as it was because of the shortage of officer candidates. Within the forces there are different levels of competitiveness depending on what regiment you're interested in, it's much easier to get a commission in the Signals or logistics as opposed to Paras, infantry or cavalry.
