I workedfor 5 months in Shanghai on an engineering placement, and after the first 2 months I became quite depressed. There's very little socialising apart from eating and drinking; the Chinese in Shanghai at least, do not like socialising by going out without a purpose, such as shopping.
I had a lot of fun on my integration trips though, visited a bunch of cities to install mobile robots into the assembly lines in factories. If you have the funds to travel the different provinces, you might enjoy your vacation more.

I'm living in China currently (ignore flag it's just a proxy so I can post here). If you can't speak Chinese nor have any desire to learn, don't come here. You'll be completely fucked. Lots of stuff is in English and some people can speak rudimentary English but good luck ordering food or something simple like that, unless you want to eat McDonalds every time you go out.

I regularly go on relatively long times (for business trips in electronics engineering) like 2 weeks every 4 months. I still can't align two sentences but I'm learning the language. China is a really, really massive country. There are some legit nice areas now, and they should be accessible to any westerners doing any job other than meme English teacher. Most of the country is a toxic wasteland though (not counting the empty parts). Also the country is very "plebeian" for lack of a better term. Of course it's true of any country, but in the US, UK, France, you shouldn't have difficulties finding people that are not complete philistines. I don't know if it's due to the cultural revolution destroying the ancestral culture but the amount of people interested in anything else than mindless entertainment is abysmal. China is 20x more populated than the UK or France or Italy but there are probably as many "high cultured" people than in any of the above.
