I'm a staunch supporter. Granted, I took the "attack is the best defense" approach and when drafted, signed up for four years immediately, ended up as an infantry drill instructor and group leader. But I and the privates I dealt with all ended up saying that it was a great and valuable experience, even those who started out hating it. It was one year back then, and a year passes quickly, you learn a lot of stuff, and I'm not talking about guns and tactics, but also human stuff, about people in general and yourself, and you get a better perspective for the benefits of modern society (at least in the infantry, when you get to crawl around in some woods and walk through rivers and stuff). In short, I think it helps people to grow and also to "man up". Something that is dangerously underrepresented nowadays.
