In addition, in 1989 a CME from an X15 solar flare hit Earth and knocked out power in Quebec for 9 hours. Nothing catastrophic like blowing up transformers and knocking out the power grid for months/years. This morning's flare was an X9. It's fucking nothing.

see Only G5 geomagnetic storms will knock out power. This CME is only expected to produce isolated periods of G3 storms. This is not going to wipe out your hard drive, either, as it takes a stronger storm to wipe out a hard drive than it does to damage a power grid.

This isn't confirmed it was reported by a NOAA loving gypo. He guessed it was G3 event but wasn't sure as even NASA aren't sure yet. We'll know pretty soon though.
This X-class flare wasn't crazy without much ejected, about 10 to 20 times less powerful then a kill shot. We also have a CME hitting us sometime later today from a few days ago, larger CME then what happened today.
