Solar flares aren't the meme civilization enders everyone thinks they are. One caused some telegraph lines to fry in the 1800's and some Canadian city lost power some time ago. Even a large one isn't going to fry cars or anything that's turned off, I highly doubt it'd even take out most of the U.S. power grid.
