pop music is predominantly english because modern pop music, what they used to call Rock & Roll at the time, was invented by an american, and it was a fusion of multiple styles dominant in the USA (some of those styles came from the black populace). Then you had a lot of british bands who became the most popular bands of all time.

Rhyming doesn't really matter all that much. Look at Japanese pop music, they make no effort to rhyme whatsoever, and a catchy Japanese song is catchy all the same. it actually seems to me that Japanese as a language is even more suited to rhyming than not, what with the way they phonetically construct their words (admittedly I don't know for certain if like, Japanese grammar or something makes it more difficult to end successive lines with a rhyming syllable).
Of course, Japanese pop music is even less mainstream so this could be seen as a non-argument. The reality is that it just comes from having a stranglehold on the market and ease of access.
