It's true he originally wanted to forge an alliance with Britain, but again, how could you expect Britain to just go ahead and ally with Germany against French wishes? Should Britain sacrifice a strong relationship built through a war that had ended not two decades before, or ally with a new regime with uncertain prospects of values.
