What's the most pretentious anime you've ever watched?
What's the most pretentious anime you've ever watched?
Kara no Kyoukai
Different and unique=/pretentious
Not every show can be about 4 highschool girls in a club doing nothing with lesbian undertones
all modern gundam like wing and seed
Something Shaft or Eva.
Ergo Proxy, because its premise it tried to be thought provoking and fell on its face in the delivery.
Bakeshit attempting phillosophy is still a sideline from what it is, a high production harem. As for the LN's I can't t imagine how bland they'd be with the anime to support them.
Ergo Proxy. Not that the anime was bad, though.
WELCOME TO ROCK AND ROLL NIGHT
F-fuck your mother!
Why is this guy so upset about Penguindrum?
Sword Art Online
anything Sup Forums watches becomes pretentious once it becomes famous so in other words all anime.
Not the most pretentious but certainly over rated.
The first episode of Bakemonogatari
Code Geass was never meant to be serious on any level.
it only becomes pretentious when people have actual discussions about content and people who dislike it don't have any easier weay of insulting a series
Tfw you find an edgy 16 year old who treats it like a religion and thinks he's Lelouch incarnate.
Any anime with Psychological genre
Tfw you find
That was you, wasn't it?
Hyouka. Soon to be Kiznaiver.
kill la kill
Penguindrum was so shit that I never want to start another show again just because of the off chance that it might also be as shit.
This kid is a hoot. I hope he achieved meme status back in the day.
I found Irisu to be incredibly self important and the amount of upset and mind games over the plot to a short film was immense.
This piece of shit.
B-but muh cool looking glossy backgrounds.
It was shit. SHIT!
looks like you haven't ever watched a real pretentious show yet.
seriously, what the fuck did I watch?
No idea, actually.
Maybe Gunslinger girl 2.
Who's the bottom?
Adaptation of the adaptation of the music video.
The one in OP is the best anime of the past 10 years though
Definitely the Monogatari series
It was purposefully doing the deconstruction thing. It doesn't really count as pretentious. It was making a point.
Anyone who does not say Limit Cycle is wrong.
Monogatari, Kara no Kyoukai, Ergo Proxy.
subete ni ga something. God damn, that was fedora: the animation.
you probably don't know the purpose of genius party nor the meaning of pretentious
Megasatan knows his shit
You probably haven't watched Limit Cycle.
It was Red Hat tho.
what makes an anime pretentious?
I wish I could meet all you know-nothing teen irl.
Just thinking how miserable your life must be make me feel good.
You have to google something a character said
It tries to be smart even though it isn't and the creators have no idea that they're doing that, so they're going deeper and deeper into embarrassing territory, even though the signs were already there early on.
Where the dialogue being used feels hamfisted and and trying to force insightful meaning where their is either none or in a clumsy manner.
That's what it means to me and especially in this example.
attempting to impress by affecting greater importance, talent, culture, etc., than is actually possessed.
Elfen Lied most definitely. The standard light novel trash that infests anime these days also likes to go pretentious as fuck, usually towards the end of its running time, accompanied by embarrassing tone shifts.
light novel trash
You mean this?
That wasn't a LN as far as I know. But it sure had its moments, like the exposition machine, or that fucking monologue by the boy in the mask.
Kill la Kill.
singling out LN content
As opposed to what, exactly? Originals?
Manga adapted series were serialized and as such are all over the fucking map.
This. Ergo Proxy is the definition of pretentious. It crutches on assumed airs of intellectualism but the ideas behind it have no weight.
Tatami Galaxy or Ping Pong.
Did anyone else actually enjoy this? I really liked the first 2/3 if it or so till it hit the ending which was way too rushed.
this retarded shit
Ergo Proxy is a poor man's Texhnolyze.
Kino no Tabi
Pretentious: attempting to impress by affecting greater importance, talent, culture, etc., than is actually possessed.
Literally anything from Kyoani. It's generic SOL schoolshit that is desperately pretending it's anything but that.
It's not pretentious when it actually shows what it intends to show. Try again.
As opposed to everything else. For some reason light novels often share stupid narrative conventions, like those awkward tone shifts, oh so quirky dialogue (that's ironically dull as fuck most of the time), or masking their obvious wish fulfillment shit behind didactic pretenses or sudden melodrama. Sure, you occasionally have your Guilty Crowns and whatnot, but I'm pretty sure that these are just trying to forcefully mimic the conventions.
Wing is farther from the present day than it is from the original Gundam, and has been for about 5 years.
Why pretentious? It was just a show about cute girls and bears loving other cute girls and bears.
If you found KyoAni pretentious, you're trying too hard.
The fans, however, are pretentious retards that try to push their shit far above from where they belong.
Does this count as a light novel? I don't think it was serialized in a LN magazine, nor does it feature those anime style illustrations.
Subete ga F ni naru
Depends. Chuuni and KnK were pretentious as fuck with their drama and lame """insight""" into the characters. But what do the more modest SoL shows pretend to be? Do you interpret the visual direction as pretending to look like movies with the fake camera effects or something?
show does a thing
oh yeah show you think you're better than me fuck you and your pretentious attitude you highfalutin jackass
show does not respond
Ergo Proxy or Kemonozume
Because the show sucked
Screen capped for future 'most pretentious Sup Forums posts' threads.
I don't get it.
every "modern" gundam takes after wing's idiocy
anything by yuasa or kon
Madoka, by miles
I've watched too many visually sound but substanceless "art" pieces to give an answer to that.
Limited to the popular stuff it has to be Utena.
What does substanceless mean?
This, also Code Geass, Attack on Titan, Fate/Zero and Death Note.
Not containing any illegal drugs.
This, also Code Geass, Attack on Titan, Fate/Zero and Death Note
None of those are all that pretentious, especially not by anime standards.
I agree that Ergo Proxy was pretentious as hell, but I still liked it a whole lot more than Bakemonogatari. The setting and concepts were more interesting.
Huh, was this during his Sailor Moon days or Utena?
This is very pretentious though.
Define pretentious, in your own words, then defend your claims.
Most of these "so-called pretentious" works really aren't. I won't claim that you didn't get them because you can get something and not dig it, but support your claims.
I've seen a handful of works that I'd call pretentious and they were all documentaries.
Stilted is a much better word to use for nearly every thing mentioned in this thread. Preachy, even.
This is the most pretentious post I read all day.
How is Penguindrum pretentious?
It's all style and no substance. The symbolism is useless if it doesn't have any fucking meaning at all.
a well stylized animation which lacks substance is pretentious
No, that'd be hollow.
Furthermore, if you think style isn't substance in itself, you're a sad, sad fool.
Name five shows more pretentious than those. If you'll mention anything like Eva, Utena, Lain, Angel's Egg or Kaiba than just don't respond and pretend you left the thread. No need to come off as an edgy, entry-level contrarian.
What is even pretentious about Death Note?
Argento Soma, RahXephon, Brain Powerd, Real Drive, GitS 2: Innocence
Fuck off, worm.
just don't respond and pretend you left the thread
I guess he took his own advice.
Zankyo no terrot... Tokyo ghoul..Overlord...Psycho pass 2.
well i drop most of them...
Hyouka without a doubt.
tfw Penguindrum is AOTY 2011
Pretentious is only used by people who don't get it
That's a pretty pretentious thing to say.
Definitely Cory in the house
I actually agree with this. It felt like watching someone read a philosophy 101 book and try to come up with hamfisted examples of the ideas he just read about. The fact that it repeats some "smart" lines with a dumb fucking screen that stays for a few seconds while the line is repeated made me fucking furious. I understood the fucking line the first time, and it wasn't clever then, either.
I'll give you Innocence and AS, but RahXephon? How?
Why? It's literally just a slice of life with a decent amount of slow character progression.
Also, anything and everything to do with its commentary on determinism.
people list shows that just try to be original
people list deconstructions
people list anything where plot information is withheld
people list shows with abstract imagery
nobody actually lists shows that ham-handedly try to create a sense of profundity while actually being childishly simple or pointless
It would honestly just be better for the human race if everyone forgot the word existed.
Shitting all over various worldviews because muh moral responsibility almost made me drop it.
Never saw anything more pretentious and hypocritical. The show was at its worst whenever cat showed up, she didnt deserve that shit.
How much they shat on best girl was also stupid.
Snake didnt deserve that shit. even more pretentious coming from a blonde lolibaba vampire.
Psycho-Pass and Terror in Resonance.
Psycho-Pass was worse than Ergo Proxy with the philosophical rambling that amounted to nothing.
Resonance was all style no substance.
Kara no Kyoukai
Wouldn't it be better to just not get upset over such a nebulous term?
It's hard to choose between monologari, EP and EVA.
Yeah, they're just shit.
holy shit. Posts like this are why it's so important that we get lead paint out of houses.
The fucking school festival was pretentious and shallow.
Except there was meaning in GitS 2:I. It's not Oshii's fault you only read books with pictures.
I don't understand. What did it pretend to be besides a school festival and somewhat unrealistically convoluted mystery?
Are mystery novels all pretentious?
What's Ikuhara doing these days? When's his next masterpiece?
I'm betting on cosplaying as Ginko and a yaoi sea gulls anime.
wow so if muh symbolism is enough to make Mawaru Penguindrum pretentious then I guess Night on the Galactic Railroad is as pretentious as it gets right?
That's my boy.
everything Nasu touches is pretentious
Kara no Kyokai has some of the worst offenders
Holy fuck, I still don't know why I sat through that whole episode. I enjoyed everything else in Genius Party, but fuck Limit Cycle.
Chuuni and KnK
These are actually the best answers in the thread. Shows like these and Kokoro Connect, Toradora, etc. are a million times more pretentious than shows like Penguindrum, Evangelion, etc.
Especially the fist episode.
Most of Genius Party was like that though, I don't know why this one gets the brunt of it. Pretty sure I only liked Watanabe's. Haven't seen beyond outside of Wanwa which I also didn't care for.
The rest of Genius Party at least has animation, Limit Cycle is screensaver with high school philosophy sprinkled on top.
Yeah, Ergo Proxy. Had some fun episodes, dropped it around episode 17 for some reason. But it's a perfect example.
Can you fully understand and appreciate something and still think it's pretentious?
This shit. I mean, just look at it.
Oh there was meaning, Anon, and i understood it. But your malice aside it was so hamfisted it made Blade Runner's narrated version look fucking auteur.
How is that pretentious in any way?
ITT pretentious = popular
Jesus Zankyou no Terror was bad. I should've dropped that shit.
It attempts to impress by affecting greater importance, talent, culture, etc., than is actually possessed.
Those textures are giving me a headache.
Try watching the entire series. It was interesting at first but by the end I just wanted them to stop.
Anything that takes itself seriously wothout even a dab of humor is fairly pretentious
Could you imagine if Trigun was as humorless as AoT?
It's been in my backlog for yonks. I may finally do it.
all of these people saying monogatari series
Don't get me wrong, I don't really think that highly of it, but what made it pretentious? Rarely talking about philosophy? I don't really remember it being anything more than a harem in disguise.
It was the reverse for me - I thought it looked like shit at first, and then it grew on me.
What, so time-travel is now pretentious? Because that's basically all the Tokyo Jupiter is.
Neon Genesis Evangelion
No, Jupiter itself is fucking pretentious.
Just look at it.
Fucking smarmy bastard smugly staring back at you with that eye like he could fuck your shit up on a whim.
Jupiter and all its avatars are pretentious assholes.
For the record I don't even believe any of the shit I listed was pretentious, just wanted to counter-shitpost that anon.
This thread is pretentious
Too many. Nearly everytime anime wants to be deep or complex they do it so haphazardly that it ends up just being vapid nonsense. Gatchaman is a good example, though i didnt watch s2
