Best korea has been slapped with the harshest round of sanctions to date: archive.is/sgLsX >both refined and crude oil will be capped at 8.5 million barrels a year, a 30% cut >A ban on exports of textiles - Pyongyang's second-biggest export worth more than $700m a year >measures to prohibit North Koreans from working overseas. Pyongyang heavily taxes its 93,000 citizens it sends abroad for work, and estimated the move would cut off $500m of revenue every year. >proposed oil embargo, asset freeze and travel ban on leader Kim Jong-un were dropped from the resolution. >90% of North Korea's reported exports are now banned >Though toned down, the sanctions are potentially far-reaching in their ability to shave as much as $1.3 billion from North Korea's revenue.
already had 1/3 of exports slashed before, NK can barely handle their shit without sanctions.
Kim probably won't give a shit still, more launches. Farmers gonna starve
Zachary Torres
Won't make any difference to Kim The people will be freezing and starving
Adam Reed
Except NK hasn't had food insecurity since the 90s.
Gabriel Young
>farmers will starve >the people What about their military personnel? The populace is completely helpless but could military coup stem from this?
Adrian Robinson
>slapped with the harshest round of sanctions to date:
Youd hardly use sanctions that are less harsh than any previously, defeats the entire purpose.
Luis Hernandez
Let the man sensationalize.
Angel Baker
>ban 60% of X one week >ban another 20% the next There's no rule that says each has to be bigger than the last. I couldn't exactly make a RonPaulitshappening.jpg OP over this.
Mason Powell
China will eventually veto though.
Adam Hall
Do trade sanctions really matter for a country that only does a few billion in trade
Chase Perry
Their defence budget is 7.5 billion. Losing 1.3 billion is a pretty big hit.
It might make starving gooks angry and attempt to overthrow fat boy.
Bentley Cook
Sanctions are dead. The Eurasia bloc will pretend to go along with it while they rebrand NK textiles as Chinese. You can't sanction a country that shares a border with their ally who happens to be one of the richest countries in the world.
Eli Martin
>OSSO DE BOI
Justin Cox
Do americans understand that sanctions doesn't work against societies without consumerism? I'm starting to think they don't believe that someone can live without their shit.
Christopher Scott
the US dialed back their sanction resolutions with a nod to china
did kim win?
Aaron Garcia
Starving communists is the most humane thing you can do with them. got a problem with it?
Dominic Ortiz
GET IT? BECAUSE COMMIES DONT EAT?
Daniel Stewart
That oil cap is going to hurt them somewhat since Soviet era tanks and submarines probably get shit gas mileage.
I guess you can say he won up until the point they are involved in a war in which case they won't be able to use engine powered military equipment longer than a few weeks.
Christopher Nguyen
>US GDP around 18 trillion
>DPRK GDP around 12.38 billion
fucking lol
Alexander Perez
Totally solid plan, because sanctions have done fuck-all in the past, right?
Nicholas Reyes
Maybe they'll eat their great leader now.
Andrew Wilson
It's going to matter to the Chinese. They just as bad of actors in all this as NK. They haven't done anything because they stand to lose from a deposed Kim/united Korea.
Parker Hughes
The point of the sanctions is to get them to spend less money on their nuclear program, what people don't understand is the the Norks care less about the nuking the US and more about blackmailing them with nukes to get us to abandon South Korea so they can invade again, I just hope that the whoever is President by the time they achieve properly functioning ICBMs isn't a pussy and doesn't give in to their demands
Owen Murphy
It's a shitty situation. If the international community does nothing, North Korea makes them look like a bunch of bitches, which just emboldens other nations like Iran and the like to stir up shit and cause problems.
On the other hand, the narrative that North Korea feeds to their citizens is that they are locked in an ideological war with the US, in which the US is trying to destroy North Korea. The NK government tells their citizens the poverty they face is caused by America, and they must unite to militarize and fight America if they want a better quality of life. Sanctions on NK feed right into this narrative, deepening the anti-American sentiment in the population. Basically it creates more problems down the line.
There's no good way to the international community to respond to NK without ultimately worsening current tensions.
Eli Young
The way I see it, the only way to end this shit is to start some internal struggle, manufacture a rebellion, that way no one but the Kim's regime gets hurt
Nolan Johnson
The worst thing about this has been Trumps empty "fire and fury" threat. Now every country on earth knows for certain that if they can get a nuke the United States won't risk fucking with them even if the president threatens to.
Hudson Hughes
There's literally nothing the US can do without starting WW3, the only way a war with North Korea can happen without the worst possible scenario is if they strike first, the US striking first would drag the Chinese into it, and maybe the russians
Aaron Russell
The norks understand that the only way for them not to turn into something like Libya is to get as many nukes as they can as fast as they can. No sanctions are going to stop them.
So they're going to "shave as much as $1.3 billion from NK revenue"? Here's a USSR-era jokerelated: "Daddy, they've raised the price of vodka again, does it mean you're going to drink less? No, sweetie, it means we're going to eat less".
Connor Johnson
How do we know there isn't some secret tunnel between China and North Korea?
Sebastian Richardson
desperate people, will do desperate things
Gavin Foster
lol learn polisci and IR >what is rhetoric fucking kids should be doing homework
Austin Reyes
>they must unite to militarize and fight America if they want a better quality of life It is not about quality of life, It is about survival, they need weapons to defend against America, or they will end like Libya, Iraq, Afghanistan or Syria.
