Mostly a cheap melodrama. Also, if you happen to be into this sort of music, it'll only make it worse. Performances are amateur-tier (except for a couple violin performances which were almost convincing), and that added violin part in Chopin's Op. 23 is gonna make you barf. Turns the piece into a Richard Clayderman/Andre Rieu sort of horror.

I feel like the people who really liked Clannad really liked this as well. Both felt pretty cheap in attempts to get pity points for the characters, but at least Clannad makes it more reasonable. I dropped this show right when You see her in the hospital

My point is there's no categorical reason it has to have worse animation (JC Staff doesn't have great animation a lot of the time, but A-1 can be hit-or-miss as well). It just so happens that this one anime has worse animation than this other one, not because one came out 5-7 years before the other and that automatically diminishes its animation quality.
