I noticed something strange recently - most people in the western world are, rightfully, hateful towards ISIS, Boko Haram and Islamic terrorists in general for their violence, bigotry and extremism. At the same time however there exists a huge cult towards Vikings, expressed quite often by the same people who criticise Islamists. The cult isn't as oriented towards Viking trade expeditions, discoveries or art, as much as towards their perceived "valiant" way of life and raids. People tend to praise their courage and streanght, how glad they were to die in battle and how strongly they believed they would go to Valhalla if they do. Yet isn't that exactly the same as the Islamists? Isn't ISIS pretty much a bunch of young men on Jeeps and pick-ups, raiding across the Syrian desert, burning and pillaging villages, killing innocent people, raping, looting etc.? They are courageous and passionate about it, they believe it is honourable to die in battle in the name of Allah and that it will get them to heaven. The similarity with Vikings is striking - a bunch of young men riding in the north sea instead of the Syrian desert, on ships instead of Jeeps, for the name of Odin instead of Allah, believing just as strongly he will send them to "heaven" - Valhalla if they die in battle. I see little difference between the two groups yet in the perceived mentality of the Western World one of them is hated and despised, while the other gets cool video games, movies, tv shows, art, music etc. and a ton of "fanboys" who praise them and say how much they would love to live in that age and be like them. Well, you can be exactly like a viking if you go and join ISIS or Boko Haram, right? But for some reason, those you hate. Can anyone explain that perceived hypocrisy to me, particularly people who are fans of the Vikings.
